Reuben Herron and his wife on Epsom Downs in May 1937.

In 1836 the then Princess Victoria met some Gypsies who were camping opposite the gates of Claremont House in Esher, Surrey. During their stay she came to know them well. Among them was a young couple waiting for the imminent birth of their first child, and the Princess had clothes sent out for the baby. Some years later the father, Matthias (Matty) Cooper, was employed to catch rats at Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle. Whether he exploited his earlier brief acquaintance with the Queen to obtain work is unknown, but family legend has it that, when he died in 1901, Queen Victoria had a wreath of yellow flowers placed upon his grave. He is often referred to as the ‘Royal Rat Catcher’.
